Inhibition Kinetics during the Oxidation of Binary Mixtures of Phenol with Catechol, Resorcinol and Hydroquinone by Phenol Acclimated Activated Sludge

چکیده
In this work the aerobic degradation of phenol (PH), catechol (CA), resorcinol (RE), hydroquinone (HY) and of the binary mixtures PH+CA, PH+RE, PH+HY by phenol-acclimated activated sludge was studied. Single substrate experiments show a Haldane-type dependence of the respiration rate on PH, RE and HY, while CA corresponded to the Monod model. Binary substrate experiments demonstrated that the presence of a second substrate only affected the kinetics, but not the stoichiometry of the oxidation of the compounds tested. While CA inhibited the oxidation of PH, PH inhibited the oxidation of RE and HY. A mathematical model was developed to represent the aerobic biodegradation of the phenolic compounds tested. The agreement between the proposed model and the experimental data indicates that the proposed model can be useful for predicting substrate and dissolved oxygen concentrations in bioreactors treating phenolic wastewaters.

Methanogenic degradation of hydroquinone and catechol via reductive dehydroxylation to phenol
Fermentative degradation of hydroquinone, catechol, and phenol was demonstrated with nearly-homogeneous mixed methanogenic cultures obtained from freshwater sediments and sewage sludge by enrichment with the respective phenolic substrates. Gram-negative short rods predominated in these cultures, together with hydrogenand acetate-utilizirtg methanogens. Acetate and methane were the only degradat...
متن کاملMetabolism of hydroquinone by human myeloperoxidase: mechanisms of stimulation by other phenolic compounds.
Hydroquinone, a metabolite of benzene, is converted by human myeloperoxidase to 1,4-benzoquinone, a highly toxic species. This conversion is stimulated by phenol, another metabolite of benzene. Here we report that peroxidase-dependent hydroquinone metabolism is also stimulated by catechol, resorcinol, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol, guaiacol, histidine, and imidazole. In order to gain insights in...
متن کاملBiodegradability of Phenol, Resorcinol and 5-methylresorcinol as Single and Mixed Substrates by Activated Sludge
The aim of this study was to investigate aerobic biodegradability of phenol, resorcinol and 5-methylresorcinol and their different two-component mixtures using activated sludge sampled from the Kohtla-Järve wastewater treatment plant. The degradation behaviour of phenolic compounds was investigated by respirometry. Non-linear regression analysis was used for determination of the kinetic paramet...
متن کاملInhibition of the Tyrosinase Oxidation
The catalytic oxidation of catechol by crude preparations of mushroom tyrosinase was studied by a method yielding data on initial reaction velocities. Graphical analysis of the results suggests that an excess of catechol inhibits its own oxidation by a competitive process, thus accounting for the observed optimum in the substrate concentration. However, added phenol, though itself a substrate, ...
